The Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department of Duncan Falls, Ohio covers 20 miles of flat state highway, but once off that road, it’s an all-uphill ride. Chief Donald Alexander says the department’s new pumper/tanker has nine-speed capability for the broad range of speed and power needed to cover its area.

The Pierce Manufacturing unit is mounted on a Dash chassis with a Detroit 6V92TA engine and a nine-speed Fuller Roadranger transmission. The pumper/tanker is equipped with a 1,250-gpm, Waterous two-stage pump; a 1,500-gal. tank with dump valve, a folding tank compartment, and two 500-watt telelights. It carries 1,000 feet of 4inch hose, 500 feet of 3-inch hose, a blitz line, and two speedlays.

The truck will be used as a water supply engine for the department, capable of tanker shuttles, laying line from hydrants as a second-due engine, and drafting and relaying from a water source.

The area covered in Howard County, Maryland by the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department is without hydrants, and static water supplies are often well off the main roadways. The department’s new pumper is designed for water supply and rescue incidents.

It has three 2 1/2einch front discharges and three rear preconnects for a 2 1/2-inch, a 1 1/2inch, and two 1 3/4-inch attack lines. The unit carries 1,500 feet of three-inch supply line and has a 600-gal. water tank. Rescue tools are carried in some of the pumper body’s 10 compartments.

The Hudson (WI) Fire Department covers the fastest-growing area in its county, which in turn is the third fastest-growing county in the state. There’s a mixture of multifamily housing, senior citizen housing, elegant homes, and industry in the area, so the department chose an apparatus capable of meeting those varied needs.

The Emergency One 95-tbot elevating platform quint is built on a Hurricane chassis with a four-door cab and has seating for seven. It has a Hale QSMG 1500-gpm, single-stage pump and a 300-gal. water tank. An Akronmatic 1,000-gpm master stream nozzle is fed through a four-inch pipe. There are master stream remote controls both in the platform and at the control base. The body has 16 highand lowside compartments on both sides, as well as four SCBA bottle sleeves.

The apparatus was specified and designed with three purposes: to increase the department’s total pumping capacity; to provide excellent rescue capabilities, keeping firefighter and civilian safety in mind; and for remote master stream capability.

Large amounts of salt used to melt mountains of snow and ice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin also damage the steel apparatus bodies in its department’s fleet. That’s one reason the Milwaukee Fire Department specified an aluminum body for its new pumper.

The pumper, manufactured by Barnett on a Mack CF 611FC chassis, has a Waterous 1500-gpm. single-stage pump with a preconnected front intake, crosslays, and prepiped three-inch Apollo heavystream appliance. The water tank holds 400 gallons Rolling doors on its seven tool compartments were specified for safety reasons.
