Aviation fire safety scholarship requirements announced

Selection criteria have been announced for the George H. Tryon III Memorial Scholarship, which is available through the foundation that bears his name.
In order to be considered for the scholarship, the candidate must:
- Be an airport firefighter or junior officer.
- Be in an airport fire service and have been so for at least two years.
- Indicate a desire to advance to officer or senior officer rank.
- Evidence leadership, technical competence, and devotion to the airport fire services.
Candidates must be recommended in writing by their chief officer, provide two letters of recommendation, and supply two personal references. Candidates must also submit an original paper of 1,000 words or less on one or more phases of airport fire services. Deadline for submission of material for next year’s scholarship is September 15,1985.
The George H. Tryon III Memorial Scholarship Foundation was created to perpetuate the memory of a man who devoted his career to the safety of human life from fire in aircraft, through granting scholarship assistance to qualified airport fire service personnel.
The scholarship assistance will be used for formal schooling to maintain and improve the individual professional ability of airport firefighter personnel so that they may effectively prevent and combat fire in the aircraft/airport environment.
It is anticipated that scholarships will be awarded annually, starting this year, at the Society of Fire Protection Engineers/National Fire Protection Association (SFPE/NFPA) meeting in mid-May.
