Combining of four NFPA standards on tank leakage and repair safeguards proposed
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Technical Committee on Tank Leakage and Repair Safeguards is proposing that two completely revised documents be included in the Annual 1999 revision cycle, thereby combining four standards into two.
NFPA 327, Standard Procedures for Cleaning or Safeguarding Small Tanks and Containers Without Entry, will be incorporated into NFPA 326, Standard Procedures for the Safe Entry of Underground Storage Tanks, and will be retitled Safeguarding Tanks and Containers for Entry, Cleaning, or Repair. NFPA 326 will address basic precautions; testing procedures; control or removal of vapors; and procedures for safe entry, cleaning, and hot work related to tanks and containers.
NFPA 328, Recommended Practice for the Control of Flammable and Combustible Liquids and Gases in Manholes, Sewers, and Similar Underground Structures, will be incorporated into NFPA 329, Recommended Practice for Handling Underground Releases of Flammable and Combustible Liquids, and will be retitled Handling Releases of Flammable and Combustible Liquids. NFPA 329 will address searching for the source of flammable and combustible liquids and gases, eliminating sources of ignition, seepage of liquids and vapors into buildings, release detection, tightness testing, and pressure testing of storage tank systems. It will also offer methods for tracing liquids underground and removing and disposing of flammable and combustible liquids.
