“Designing Fire Protection for Steel Beams,” a 28-page guide from American Iron and Steel Institute, is intended to supplement specifications for fire resistance ratings issued by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. The guide includes the UL/AISI beam substitution equation and 18 figures and tables that illustrate and provide data on achieving optimum fire resistance in protected steel beams. “Feel the Door,” an eight-page fire prevention month folder, contains charts for planning two fire exits, recording dates for smoke alarm battery changes, and fire drills. Other fire campaign materials include a life-size firefighter poster and an elementary school program to promote home fire escape planning. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Fire Academy released two instructional packages designed to introduce fire service managers and supervisors to basic supervision skills and techniques. The two 16-hour courses are “Fire Service Supervision: Increasing Personal Effectiveness” and “Fire Service Supervision: Increasing Team Effectiveness.” The courses were developed to improve supervisors’ personal effectiveness and their ability to relate to others in the work environment.
