The FIRE CAPTAIN ORAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE is a 228-page book with 10 chapters, containing more than 400 oral interview and situation-type questions. “THE VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER: A BREED APART” is a newly released video from Emergency Resource, Inc. The six-tape course teaches students how a successful volunteer department should operate. FireSoft introduces a new PUMP SIMULATOR for IBM-compatible computers. The system lets you practice proper pump operation; gauges and handles appear on the screen, with random scenarios generated by the computer. STU RAFOS, president of Seagrave Fire Apparatus, Inc., was elected president of the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers Association in November.

Also elected to the FAMA Executive Committee: first vice president, JIM JOHNSON, general sales manager of Pierce Manufacturing, Inc.; second vice president, GEORGE SZTYKIEL, president of Spartan Motors, Inc.; and treasurer, DAN KREIKEMIER, president of Smeal Fire Equipment Co. BOB DIETZ, general manager of Clifford B. Hannay and Son, will serve as division director. PETER DARLEY, assistant vice president of W.S. Darley & Company, and JEFF MORRIS, vice president of Alexis Fire Equipment Company, were elected to FAMA’s Technical Committee as chairman and vice chairman, respectively.

FAMA, the largest division of the National Truck Equipment Association, works to expand and improve the market for fire apparatus equipment; develop safety standards and safe operating procedures; and encourage further improvement of products.

Deputy Fire Chief LARRY K. BELL of the Pinellas Park Fire Department has been named Fire Inspector of the Year (1988) for the State of Florida. Nominated by his peers for this award, Bell has been instrumental in the development and implementation of a fire safety curriculum for public schools at the first, second, and third grade levels.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announces two appointments: EDWARD M. WALL to the Senior Executive Service, and DR. DAVID MCLOUGHUN as director of FEMA’s Office of Training. Prior to his new assignment, McLoughlin was deputy associate director of FEMA’s State and Local Programs and Support Directorate. He replaces ROBERT H. VOLLAND, who had been acting director of training.

Wall, in addition to his appointment to the SES—established for top management positions in the federal civil service—will continue to serve as the United States Fire Administration’s deputy administrator.
