The HOME SAFETY COUNCIL’s (HSC) program Start Safe: A Fire and Burn Safety Program for Preschoolers and their Families was developed with support from a fire prevention and safety grant awarded through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security/Office of Domestic Preparedness. The program’s resources are developmentally appropriate for preschool classrooms and the materials are presented in both English and Spanish. The program includes comprehensive expert guidance developed specifically for fire and life safety educators as well as teaching guidance designed for preschool teachers and administrators. FIRE-DEX announced that Lieutenant Mike Donohue of the BP Oil Refinery in Toledo, Ohio, is the grand prize winner of the “Take the Fire-Dex Challenge” event at the Fire Department Instructors Conference and recipient of the “Heat of the Battle II” custom Orange County chopper. To compete, firefighters tried on Fire-Dex turnout gear and competed in a firefighter-inspired obstacle course to be entered into a random drawing to win the motorcycle. Nearly 1,000 participants took the Fire-Dex Challenge for a chance to win the chopper, valued at approximately $60,000; or one of three sets of turnout gear autographed by American Chopper star Paul Teutul Sr.

HUNGRY-MAN® FROZEN DINNERS announces a contest to find “The Hungriest Firehouse.” The contest invites firehouses across the United States to submit a list of what their firefighters eat in one week (seven days) along with a photo of the squad eating together. AKRON BRASS named David Durstine as vice president of marketing. The NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION (NFPA) presented three fire and life safety awards. Wayne D. Moore received the Standards Medal for his contributions to the NFPA’s codes and standards development process and his dedication to the cause of fire safety worldwide. Dorothy Bruck and Ian Thomas received the 2009 Harry C. Bigglestone Award for Excellence in Communication of Fire Protection Concepts for their paper, “Comparison of the Effectiveness of Different Fire Notification Signals in Sleeping Older Adults.” Pfizer Inc. was awarded the Industrial Fire Prevention Week Contest Award for promoting fire and related safety messages to employees and their communities in conjunction with local fire departments during Fire Prevention Week in 2008. www.nfpa.org.
