DEPARTMENTS

FROM THE PUBLISHER

With the December issue, Fire Engineering will have a new editor. Thomas F. Brennan succeeds Jerry Laughlin, who left the magazine to return to Massachusetts and the National Fire Protection Association.

Tom, who joined the New York City Fire Department in 1962, was promoted to lieutenant in 1970 and became captain in 1977. Most recently, he has been awaiting appointment to battalion chief. He has served in some of New York’s busiest fire companies in the East New York, Brownsville and Bush wick sections of Brooklyn. At the time of his retirement, he commanded Ladder Company 111.

A resident of West Sayville, N.Y., Tom has been a volunteer fire fighter since 1964. Since 1981, he has served as deputy chief instructor of the Suffolk County Fire School. While helping develop courses for use in the school’s curriculum, he also conducted lectures in fire stations and at industrial complexes throughout the county. He has been a guest lecturer on the subject of forcible entry at national fire conferences, including the Fire Department Instructors Conference.

A summa cum laude graduate of John Jay College in New York City with a B.S. in fire science, Tom began working with Fire Engineering early this year as a consultant on the various phases of fire science.

His appointment as editor continues a long Fire Engineering tradition—naming an experienced, respected fire professional to guide the magazine. The editor’s desk, once held by Jim Casey, Dick Sylvia and Jerry Laughlin, is in the good hands of yet another leader in the fire service.

We welcome Tom to Fire Engineering and hope that you’ll have the chance to meet him in the upcoming months at the many fire conferences and training sessions he plans to attend.
