Brookdale International Systems Inc. Announces Recall of Respiratory Protection Escape Devices

Vancouver, British Columbia – Brookdale International Systems Inc., based in Vancouver, Canada, has voluntarily recalled the following SCBA emergency escape respirators:

  • EVACpro(tm) for Scott Emergency Escape Respirator
  • EVACpro(tm) for Dräger Emergency Escape Respirator
  • Survivair SmokeEater(tm) Air-Purifying Escape Canister

These products were purchased to provide back-up respiratory protection for SCBA users in a structural smoke/fire emergency.

“The decision to recall these products, announced on April 20, 2006, was a demonstration of our commitment to the safety of our customers, said Derrick Russell, Brookdale’s president.

Recent tests confirmed that the emergency escape respirators could fail to work properly, exposing the user to harmful carbon monoxide which could seriously compromise their ability to escape the fire threat. Therefore, these products SHOULD NOT BE USED. The company is not aware of incidents where a user of these products was exposed to harmful levels of carbon monoxide.

This recall extends to all the above products currently in the marketplace. Specifics of the recall program for the EVACpro(tm) for Scott and EVACpro(tm) for Dräger, including instructions on returning these products for refund, are available on the Brookdale Web site at http://www.evacsafety.com, or by calling Brookdale Customer Service (toll-free) at (800) 459-3822. Information regarding the SmokeEater recall is available under “Safety Notices” on the Survivair Web site at http://www.survivair.com

Recalled products must be returned, with supporting documentation, by June 30, 2006 to be eligible for refund.

“Brookdale sincerely regrets any inconvenience created by this product recall,” said Mr. Russell. “We are working diligently to rectify the situation in a safe, thorough and responsible manner.”
