Earthquake loss guidelines for emergency officials

Earthquake loss guidelines for emergency officials

The National Academy of Sciences has released new guidelines for estimating potential losses from earthquakes.

The report is intended for use by state and local governments in raising public awareness, as well as disaster response and mitigation planning. It provides information on general classes of buildings and facilities, but not loss estimates for any particular area or building.

Through the report, which was funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, officials can receive assistance in estimating deaths and injuries, direct repair costs, and damage to transportation and communications.

Copies are available from The Committee on Earthquake Engineering, Division of Natural Hazard Mitigation, National Academy of Sciences, 2101 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, D. C. 20418, or call (202) 334-3312.
