Report: Firefighters’ Hoods Seen as Cancer Risk

A recent report examined the link between dirty hoods and cancer in firefighters.

WTNH (http://bit.ly/1wljYIG) looked at the case of former Waterbury (CT) firefighter Dan Huften, who retired after a back injury and was subsequently diagnosed with Stage 3 Colo-rectal cancer. Huften reflected on the possible role that dirty hoods, part of the firefighters’ personal protective ensemble, might have played.

The report cited a National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health report released about a year ago that implicated dirty hoods in firefighter cancer.

The report said that recently more than 200 hoods were donated anonymously to the Waterbury Fire Department so that firefighters can rotate them out.
