Two volunteer firefighters helped save a baby trapped inside of a minivan that caught fire Monday morning after an accident on the Garden State Parkway, reports The Asbury Park Press.
Authorities received calls of the crash shortly after 11 a.m. near exit 74. They were en route to the scene when two volunteer firefighters, one off-duty, pulled over by the vehicles.
Lt. Pat O’Donnell, president of the Beach Haven Fire Department, was driving southbound on the Parkway when he saw smoke coming out of the minivan. He pulled over and saw flames erupt from the hood, just as the driver said her baby was in the minivan.
O’Donnell said he and a firefighter responding from the Lanoka Harbor fire department rescued the baby from the car. Using Lanoka Harbor’s fire extinguishers, O’Donnell said he brought the fire under control long enough so the Lanoka Harbor firefighter could undo the car seat and save the baby. O’Donnell was not certain of the other firefighter’s name.
