Indiana Fire Chief Dies After Responding to Vehicle Fire

An Indiana fire chief has passed away after responding to a vehicle fire earlier this week, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Chief Michael Payne, 58, of the Brookston Prairie Township Fire Department and members of his department responded to a truck fire on Interstate-65 north of Lafayette, Indiana, just before midnight on November 7. After the fire was extinguished, Chief Payne fell ill and collapsed. Lifesaving efforts were initiated and Chief Payne was transported to Indiana University Hospital (Lafayette) where those efforts continued until he passed away at approximately 0145hrs on November 8.
