Firefighters responded to a fire Wednesday morning at a Methodist church in Porstmouth, Virginia.

The steeple of Monumental United Methodist Church was engulfed in flames, blanketing the downtown in smoke, according to a report from The Virginia Pilot.

Fire Chief James Hoffler offered some photos from the scene.

In this instance, the church steeple acted as a flue, like a chimney, Hoffler told reporters. The fire reportedly did not spread into the church’s sanctuary.
