The White Horse Fire Company of Hamilton Township, New Jersey designed its new apparatus with input from the fire commissioner, officers, and paid drivers, according to Chief Anthony Innes.

The unit was bought to replace a first-run attack engine, so the capabilities of a larger pump and water tank were important. Of equal importance was the ability to enclose all responding firefighters and to put an elevated master stream in operation quickly.

The pumper, built by Simon/LTI on a Duplex chassis, has a 199inch wheelbase and mounts a four-door cab seating seven. It is powered by a Detroit 8V 92TA diesel engine with Allison HTB-741 automatic transmission.

The pump is a Waterous CMUY 2,000-gpm two-stage featuring a 4inch discharge on the right side, three preconnected crosslays for 1 1/2and 2 1/2-inch attack lines, and a 1 1/2-inch preconnected foam line with 100 feet of hose in the front bumper. A 5-inch rear intake is provided. Four-inch piping is used to feed the 1,000-gpm TFT nozzle mounted on the 75-foot aerial ladder.

The unit has 11 tool compartments and carries 750 gallons of water and 30 gallons of foam. It mounts a 7.5-kw diesel generator and has six 500-watt Quik-Raze floodlights.

The Farmington Hills, Michigan Fire Department is a combination of career and paid volunteers. It serves an area of 34 square miles out of four stations and protects a population of 70,000. The fleet is comprised of four pumpers, four midi pumper/squads, three ambulances, a haz-mat unit, and two aerial platforms.

Ladder 4, its newest platform, was designed to serve a large light industrial area and corporate office buildings, according to Deputy Chief Peter Baldwin. He adds that it has two safety aspects: The men are safer in a platform than on a ladder when working in the air, and they are safer while responding because they’re enclosed in a fourdoor cab, which in this case seats seven.

The apparatus, built by Sutphen, is the 90 + model with a payload capacity of 700 lbs. in the bucket. It is powered by a Detroit 8V 92 diesel engine w-ith an Allison automatic transmission.

The unit has a Hale QSMG 1,250-gpm, single-stage pump, which is in a fully enclosed compartment that keeps the instruments clean and out of the weather, Baldwin says. The unit carries 600 feet of 5inch hose for supply and has two crosslays for 1 1/2and 1 3/4-inch, attack lines just behind the turntable.

Ground ladders are stored flat, and there are 14 tool compartments. Because the department does not always know how many volunteers will respond, 12 SCBAs and eight spare cylinders are carried on the vehicle to accommodate a larger turnout.

The unit carries 300 gallons of water and has a 6-kw diesel generator. Two 500-watt floodlights are mounted on the cab roof and two over the bucket.

The Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department of Collegedale,Tennessee purchased a tanker-pumper because of the changing economics of the area. Assistant Chief Teddy Rogers explains that it was designed for a dual purpose: as a primary pumper in the industrial and business districts and as a shuttle tanker for the rural areas where water must be transported.

The apparatus is built on an Emergency-One Hurricane chassis featuring a four-door cab and seating for eight. It has a Detroit model 8V92TA diesel engine with a Jake Brake and an Allison model HT 740 automatic transmission. It has a 240-inch wheelbase and carries 2,000 gallons of water.

The tanker-pumper has a single-stage American-Godiva Model MAH 1,500-gpm pump. There are two 4-inch quick-fill pipes (above the pump), which go from the rear of the apparatus to the top of the tank, bypassing the pump. These are in addition to the normal side intakes. A 10-inch dump valve is also featured. The unit can fill at a rate of 1,000 gpm and dump at a rate of 1,500 gpm.

Nine tool compartments are located on the body, and it has a slidein compartment for a folding water tank.
