Media Awards Contest
Newspaper, radio and television journalists in the United States and Canada are eligible for cash prizes of up to $500, plaques and certificates in each of six categories in the 1979 International Association of Fire Fighters Media Awards Contest. A seventh category covers IAFF local union publications.
The annual contest honors the news media for reporting, commentary and photography that best portray the professional and hazardous work of fire fighters in the United States and Canada.
Contest entries must have been published or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 1978, and must be sponsored by a local, state or provincial affiliate of the IAFF. They will be judged by a panel of independent experts from the media and fire fighting authorities.
Each category’s first prize winner receives $500 and a plaque. Second prize is $250 and a certificate. Honorable mention receives a certificate.
The categories are:
- Best news or feature story appearing in a newspaper or magazine with less than 100,000 circulation.
- Best news or feature story appearing in a newspaper or magazine with more than 100,000 circulation.
- Best news photo appearing in a newspaper or magazine with more than 100,000 circulation.
- Best news photo appearing in a newspaper or magazine with more than 100,000 circulation.
- Best television news story or feature.
- Best radio editorial comment on the hazards and/or complexity of fire fighting or editorial of a documentary or public service nature.
- Best IAFF local union publication.
