The Christmas Rescue

The Christmas Rescue

(with apologies to Clement C. Moore)

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the hall The trucks were all parked, ’cause there wasn’t a call. The gear was all hung in the lockers to keep And everyone hoped that the page wouldn’t beep.

The guys were all home with their families to stay In hope that tomorrow would be a fine day.

The dispatcher sat with the radio near She stifled a yawn, there was nothing to hear. The EMTs slept with their pagers quite close There wasn’t a run, or a patient to dose.

The cops were just cruisin’ with nothing to do They looked for the bad gin s in groups of two.

Then the silence was broken, the dispatcher jumped The phone was a-ringing, to the deck her feet thumped When she glanced at the console her blood started to run The incoming call shown on 9-1-1.

Hie child was frightened, the woman could tell When she hung up the line she started to yell.

Call Fire, call Rescue and the ambulance please Get everyone rolling and call the police.

The scene was quite near so the trip wasn’t long TTie problem was clear but something was wrong. The patient was near and all started to worry TTie task would be tough so they started to hurry

The firemen started their ladders to raise T he EMTs struggled to see through the haze.

The victim was somewhere—on the roof it was clear

ITiey struggled to listen, his cries they could hear They found he was trapped in the chimney for sure The rescue was hard and they pondered the cure

The jolly old guy was really quite stuck To manage to free him they would need good lur k So they got out the jaws the jacks and some bars The KMT’s grabbed the gear from their ears The only thing showing was the poor old guy’s head It was shorn with a hat that was colored quite red.

He was breathing OK. wasn t bleeding a bit The man was all right, just stuck where he lit So they tied him all up and pulled from above While the men from below gave a groan and a shove. From the chimney he popped like a cork from a bottle He lit on his feet without even a toddle.

The medics they checked him, from head to toe When they saw he was fine, it was time to go.

W ith a whistle quite loud his sleigh he did call When the reindeer appeared it was quite clear to all The patient was Santa—to some Old Saint Nick T he rescuers laughed, they’d pulled quite a trick

The Old Man flew off with a smile and a wave

The rescuers grinned when they thou gilt who they’d saved

They all headed back to their stations and halls

The dispatcher slept, there were no more calls

So with this thought Good Friend. I bid you Adieu,

Just watch out Christmas Eve—it could happen to you!
