Firefighters Injured in Chicago River Rescue

Chicago firefighters responded Saturday to an incident in which a 19-year-old woman reportedly jumped into the Chicago River.

The local CBS affiliate reported that three firefighters were hospitalized in the water rescue effort, along with the patient, who was in serious condition.

“One of our battalion chiefs stripped down, jumped into the river, swam out there, brought her back to shore,” Chicago Fire Department Battalion Chief Tom Arnswald told reporters.

The battalion chief was hospitalized as a precaution, and two other firefighters were transported after suffering minor injuries from flying debris created by a helicopter that assisted with the rescue operation, the report said.
